Consumer confidence drops as economic concerns rise
The index scored UK consumer confidence at -23, with all measures down in comparison to March’s figures.
The measure for the general economic situation of the country during the last 12 months was down five points to -47, and six points worse than in April 2024.
Expectations for the general economic situation over the next 12 months fell eight points to -37, which is 16 points worse off than April 2024.
Changes in personal finances during the last year was rated at -10, one point less than the previous month, albeit one point better than in April 2024.
The forecast for personal finances over the next 12 months dropped four points to -3, which is five points worse than this time last year.
The Major Purchase Index, which measures whether now is the right time to make a major acquisition, declined two points to reach a score of -19, although was six points better than April 2025.
The Savings Index, however, rose five points to reach a positive score 30 in April, and is also is four points better than this time last year.
The results are based on a survey of 2,002 UK adults carried out between 1st April and 14th April.
Neil Bellamy, consumer insights director at GfK, said: “There are good reasons for this downturn. Consumers have not only been grappling with multiple April cost increases in the form of utilities, council tax, stamp duty and road tax, but they are also hearing dire warnings of renewed high inflation on the back of the Trump tariffs.
“The inflation rate eased in March, but are we now on the verge of another round of rapidly increasing prices? If so, consumer confidence is likely to collapse and the broad gains seen since the disastrous September 2022 mini-budget, when confidence hit a record low of -49, could quickly be eroded.”
