Polling website FiveThirtyEight closes
Disney closed 538 and laid off around 15 employees as part of wider cuts, The Wall Street Journal reported on 5th March.
Founded by Nate Silver in 2008, FiveThirtyEight (later styled as 538 ) started as a blog that aggregated political polling and published analysis of opinion polling and politics.
ESPN acquired 538 in 2013, and in 2018, its operations transferred to ABC News, also under parent company Disney. Silver left in 2023.
Writing in a post on X, Nate Silver said: “I just saw the news about 538. My heart goes out to the people there. They were tremendously hard-working and produced a lot of extremely valuable data and insight for everyone who wants to understand politics better. They deserved much better.”
