CCPA final regulations approved

US – The final regulations under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) have been approved by the Office of Administrative Law (OAL).

Data protection

The regulations instruct businesses on how to comply with the CCPA and provide tools for consumers to control who has access to their personal data and how it is used.

They also establish procedures for compliance and exercise of rights and clarify accountability mechanisms for businesses.

California’s attorney general, Xavier Becerra, submitted proposed final regulations to the OAL on 1st June. The approved regulations come into effect immediately.

Under CCPA, people living in California have control over their personal information including the right to know and the right to opt-out of the sale of personal information collected by businesses.

The law came into effect on 1st January 2020 and enforcement began on 1st July, however, the regulations will provide businesses with practical guidance on how to use it.

Attorney general Becerra said: “With these rules finalised, California breaks ground and leads the nation to protect and advance data privacy. These rules guide consumers and businesses alike on how to implement the California Consumer Privacy Act. As we face a pandemic of historic proportions, it is particularly critical to be mindful of personal data security.”
