CMA looks into Google’s data analytics purchase
Google bought Looker for $2.6m in June 2019.
The CMA investigation comes after it said it had reasonable grounds to suspect Google was planning to roll Looker into Alphabet, Google’s parent company, rather than keep it as a separate business. This could mean less competition in the UK market.
The CMA had invited submissions from relevant parties to comment on the deal which are open until 20th December; it will decide on 13th February whether to carry out a full in-depth investigation.
Google said that its purchase of Looker had “received regulatory approval in the US and Austria” and that it “continued to make progress with regulators in the UK”.
