CMA to investigate Apple and Google

UK – The UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has launched an investigation into Apple and Google’s alleged duopoly over the mobile browser market and cloud gaming.

The CMA had previously consulted on launching a market investigation alongside its Mobile ecosystem market study report, which said that Apple and Google had an “effective duopoly” on mobile ecosystems.

The report said that the duopoly had allowed the two companies to exercise a “stranglehold” over operating systems, app stores and web browsers on mobile devices.

The CMA said that 97% of all mobile web browsing in the UK in 2021 happened on either Apple or Google provided browser engines.

Responses to the consultation found there was “substantial support” for a fuller investigation into Apple and Google’s dominance of the mobile browser market and also how Apple allegedly restricts cloud gaming through its App Store.

Responses said the current status quo was harming other businesses, holding back innovation and adding unnecessary costs.

The CMA said it would consider these complaints alongside Apple and Google’s arguments that the companies are working to protect users.

The investigation will consider whether new rules are required to drive better outcomes in the mobile browser and cloud gaming sectors.

Sarah Cardell, interim chief executive at the CMA, said: “Many UK businesses and web developers tell us they feel that they are being held back by restrictions set by Apple and Google.

“We plan to investigate whether the concerns we have heard are justified and, if so, identify steps to improve competition and innovation in these sectors.”
