Denham’s five-year term was set to end in July this year, but she will now step down at the end of October.

The request for an extension to her post came from culture secretary Oliver Dowden, according to the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.

The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) said: “Following a request from the secretary of state for DCMS, Elizabeth Denham has agreed to extend her term as information commissioner to 31 October 2021, while the recruitment process for her successor is completed.

Denham was appointed information commissioner in July 2016, succeeding Christopher Graham.

She was previously information and privacy commissioner for British Columbia, Canada.
