Durham University and ONS partner on data careers

UK – Durham University and the Office for National Statistics (ONS) have agreed to collaborate on lectures, training and research.

Ian Diamond of the ONS and Karen O'Brien of Durham University sign an agreement

The initial three-year partnership will see ONS staff deliver lectures and training to Masters students studying data science and business analytics, and work with PhD students on priority research projects.

The ONS also expects recruitment events for internships and graduate jobs to take place.

National statistician Sir Ian Diamond (pictured, left), said: “In a world that’s being driven by data, it’s more important than ever that we not only inspire the next generation of data scientists and analysts, but that we’re giving them the best training and experiences possible.

“I’m delighted that the ONS and Durham University have come together to make this happen in what will be a hugely beneficial partnership for everyone involved.”

The partnership will also signal further research collaboration between the ONS and the university, with university academics set to contribute to studies on economic statistics and methodology. A recent workshop, held at the university between the ONS and Durham academics, explored key areas of research within this space.

Professor Karen O’Brien, vice-chancellor of Durham University (pictured, right), said: “Our partnership with the ONS will further enable academic expertise to shape economic thinking and data methodology, while also providing exceptional opportunities for our students to build successful careers in data science and analytics.”
