Previously deputy chief economist and head of research at the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), Croxson will analyse firms’ use of data and technology and the implications for consumers and markets.

She will also shape the CMA’s data strategy with the aim of making its operations more effective.

Prior to joining the FCA in 2017, Croxson held senior roles at QuantumBlack and McKinsey. In her new role, she will report to the CMA’s chief economic adviser.

Karen Croxson said: “Data and AI are transforming business models with profound implications for markets and consumers. I’m delighted to join the CMA at such a critical time and have this incredible opportunity to serve consumers and support digital innovation and competition across the UK economy.”

The CMA has also appointed Jessica Lennard as chief strategy and external affairs officer and Jennie Halliday as senior director for advocacy and external engagement.

Sarah Cardell, chief executive of the CMA said: “These are all critical and high calibre appointments and I have no doubt that Jessica, Jennie and Karen will play an essential role in ensuring that we deliver impactful outcomes for people, businesses and the economy in line with our new strategy.”
