The Turning AI World-Leading Researcher Fellowships provide support to building centres of excellence in AI research, and aim to allow researchers to move to or remain in the UK to conduct their research.

The fellowships are part of the wider £46m Turing AI Fellowships to attract, retain and develop the best international researchers in the discipline. Previous fellows were announced last year by UK Research and Innovation.

The new fellows include Professor Zoubin Ghahramani of the University of Cambridge, Professor Samuel Kaski of the University of Manchester and Professor Mirella Lapata of the University of Edinburgh.

Professor Philip Torr and Professor Michael Wooldridge, both of the University of Oxford, have also received a fellowship.

As part of the fellowship programme, each fellow will lead a major programme of AI research, translation and innovation, and actively engage with questions around AI and ethics.

Other stipulations of the fellowship programme include delivering research with a high likelihood of impact on UK society and the economy, and to build a broader portfolio of funding and activities beyond the fellowship to allow them to continue their work at the end of the programme.

Developing the skills and careers of their teams, building strong relationships with academia, industry and other stakeholders, and to act as a leader in the AI community.
