Full Fact launches anti-fake news group

UK – Media fact-checking charity Full Fact has recruited Facebook, Twitter and Google for a campaign to prevent fake news undermining the rollout of a Covid-19 vaccine.

Full Fact said in September that it would convene a group of experts to develop a collaborative model to prevent misinformation online, with funding from Facebook.

The group will attempt to learn lessons of previous information crises, such as during the pandemic or in previous elections, to work out a proportional and effective way of tackling misinformation.

Members will attempt to create a set of standards of accountability for tackling misinformation, including core principles such as the need to have a good supply of information and to work with relevant, responsible experts. A draft set of principles has already been published.

As well as Facebook, Google and Twitter, members of the group include the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport in the UK, the Privy Council Office in Canada and the International Fact-Checking Network.

Other members include the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at Oxford University, new organisation First Draft, Boom in India, Chequeado in Argentina, Maldita.es in Spain, and Africa Check, which operates in South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya and Senegal.
