Nielsen to give panellists wearable devices

US – Nielsen is providing almost 3,000 wearable devices to panel members as the company seeks to modernise and improve the panel experience.

Around 60,000 members of the Portable People Meter (PPM) panel will have access to the PPM Wearable devices as part of a drive to increase engagement and to attract new panellists.

PPM is currently used as part of Nielsen’s audio, local television and national audience measurement, and is used both in-home and out-of-home.

The next-gen wearable PPM metering will serve as foundational support for Nielsen One, a cross-media solution that will deliver a single, deduplicated metric for total media consumption across television, digital and audio.

The PPM Wearable can be worn either via a wristband, clip or pedant, and will have a companion app to improve communication, encourage participation and enable data transmission outside the home.

Findings from the panel are expected to be shared in the second quarter of 2022, with a full rollout of PPM Wearables in new panel households planned for the second half of 2022.

Mainak Mazumdar, chief research and data officer at Nielsen, said: “By modernising our panels with the PPM Wearable, we are not only improving the overall panellist experience and increasing engagement, but also ensuring our measurement is durable and can adapt to evolving technology changes.”
