Update on labour market statistics progress issued by stats regulator

UK – The Office for Statistics Regulation (OSR) has published an update on progress made on labour market statistics, recommending that the Office for National Statistics publish more detail about plans to transition to the Transformed Labour Force Survey.

The Labour Force Survey (LFS) is the main survey used to compile official estimates of the UK labour market.

Due to concerns raised in 2023 over survey representativeness because of low response rates, the ONS has been developing a new version of the LFS, called the Transformed Labour Force Survey (TLFS) and has been running this alongside its work to improve the LFS.

In an update on the work being done by the ONS, the OSR has recommended that the ONS publishes more details on the plans to change to the TFLS, including considering whether routine data from the TFLS could be published before the transition.

The ONS should set out its plans for regular reporting on the progress of this plan by April 2025 ‘to support trust in the statistics, and their acceptability amongst users’, the regulator said.

The OSR has also asked ONS to continue to examine the accuracy of estimates from the LFS and publish details about causes of uncertainty and bias to assist appropriate use of the data.

The ONS should report again on progress on all of the regulator’s recommendations by July of this year.
