Michael Brown – Research Hero
Michael Brown, partner, insight and cross-culture, UM, and chair, MRS Pride
Michael Brown has worked at UM for seven years and in 2019 became chair of the newly launched MRS Pride, which offers a platform for LGBTQ+ consumer insight and methodological best practice and brings together community members.
During the past year, he has also shared his knowledge with the advertising industry’s timeTo campaign to end sexual harassment, helping the campaign’s committee in its objective to measure the extent of harassment so that it can record its impact.
Brown was nominated as a Research Hero because: “He has given time to a great many causes over the past year, above and beyond his day job. He’s been generous, thoughtful and sensitive throughout.”
What is the biggest challenge you have faced during your career?
Finding my voice.
What will be the next big trend or development in the research industry, and why?
Nat rep quotas that go beyond gender, region and socio-economic quotas. Whereas adding screening questions to identify disability, ethnicity, sexuality orientation used to be considered leftfield, I think they’ll soon become more normalised (along with the all-important ‘prefer not to say’ option, of course, out of respect for respondents who may not be inclined to share those details).
Who inspires you as a researcher?
The many pioneering researchers who share their work on MRSpride platforms. They have invariably put their full souls’ effort and passion into evidencing LGBTQ+ experiences, in many cases with the intention of helping improve life for LGBTQ+ people.
