Hansa ‘renews’ Indian reader survey contract

INDIA— Hansa Research is reported to have secured a three-year contract to run the Indian Readership Survey (IRS) – despite plans to merge that survey with its rival from next year.

The contract win is reported on Indian media website IndianTelevision.com, which quotes Hansa MD Ashok Das as saying, “We are happy to be awarded the IRS contract for the next three years.”

Sabina Solomon, general secretary of the Media Research Users Council – the owner of the IRS – is also quoted, but neither Solomon nor Das could be reached to confirm the report today.

Hansa has held the IRS contract for the past three years, but news of its renewal for the 2010–2012 period comes as a surprise given the announcement last month that the MRUC had agreed to merge the IRS with the National Readership Survey (NRS), a rival study produced by the National Readership Studies Council.

Nielsen had been the contractor for the NRS prior to its suspension three years ago, and it was expected that a new tender would be issued later in the year for the combined survey contract. It is unclear whether this remains the case.
