Tumblr to run ads on all blogs
The announcement, made in a blog post, stated that ads were to be introduced on Thursday. It has not provided specific details on how the programme will operate.
Bloggers that choose to participate in the scheme will be required to register, but can choose to opt out by changing their blog settings. Bloggers who opt in will not receive any revenue until later this year.
"This was a long time coming, and will be one of the biggest projects we’ve ever launched at Tumblr," Tumblr founder David Karp wrote on his blog.
"It’s been a busy summer—a new GIF maker, live video, new messaging stuff—and there’s a whole lot more on the way. Next up: getting you paid for your work."
