Opinium and LSE scoop European identity survey

UK— Online agency Opinium Research and the London School of Economics (LSE) have been awarded a contract by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) to conduct a study into the meaning of ‘the European identity’.

The research partners will survey around 30,000 people across the 27 European Union member states through a mixture of telephone, online and face-to-face interviews, depending on the most appropriate method for each country. Fieldwork commenced earlier this month and the results will be released at the end of July.

Issues covered in the the survey include the meanings of ‘Europe’ and ‘Europeanness’, the meaning of European citizenship, attitudes to immigration and freedom of movement and European sports team representation. It will also cover domestic voting intentions and attitudes towards European political, economic and social integration.

Opinium director Dan Foreman said: “The role of the European Union is high up on the political agenda and it is great to be involved in such a significant study, the insights from which will be invaluable.”
